A common question from parents is, “When should I seek help from a speech pathologist?” The answer is: it’s never too early to ask questions, if you have concerns about your child’s communication. Early intervention can make a big difference, and speech pathologists can assess and support communication skills from infancy onwards.

It’s important to understand that communication isn’t just about talking. It’s any interaction, verbal or non-verbal, that a child uses to express themselves. Sometimes, communication presents as behaviors. These behaviors can range from cute, like a toddler tugging at your hand when they want something, to frustrating or even dangerous, like a child hitting when they’re upset. All of these behaviors are ways children communicate when they don’t yet have the words or skills to express themselves clearly.

Speech pathologists help by guiding children to replace these behaviors with more effective communication skills. We address spoken and non-spoken communication, including gestures, signs, and the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices. If you notice behaviors that seem to signal frustration or difficulty with communication, it may be time to reach out for help.

Remember, it’s never too early to consult a speech pathologist. We’re here to support your child’s communication at every stage of development.
